Before you were born- a look at life before birth
Second Grade’s Main Theme
Activity
Talk about Angels in the Bible and in the lives of the Saints:
Imagine you had a bodyguard who was always with you. He did all the usual bodyguard things like protecting you from danger, warding off assailants, and generally keeping you safe in all situations. But he also did more than this: he offered you moral guidance, helped you become a stronger person, and led you to your ultimate calling in life.
We don’t have to imagine it. We already have such a bodyguard. Christian tradition calls them guardian angels. Their existence is supported by Scripture and both Catholics and Protestants believe in them. Too often we neglect to utilize this great spiritual resource. (I, for one, am certainly guilty of this!) In order to better enlist the aid of our guardian angels, it might help to have a better appreciation of what they can do for us. I will mention a few things today. Let’s look at a few Scripture passages:
Psalm 91:11-12 Protect us from harm
Acts 12 Intervene miraculously to save us from trouble (students might want to share their stories)
Matthew 18:10 Guard us from birth.
Some saints who saw their guardian angels include:
Padre Pio: Communicated with his guardian angel and other guardian angels who would inform him when their humans needed prayer.
St. Gemma Galgani: Had a close friendship with her guardian angel.
St. Frances of Rome: Was able to see and hear her guardian angel who protected and directed her.
St. Faustina Kowalska: Saw her guardian angel regularly and described her as very beautiful.
St. Josemaria Escriva: Had a friendly rapport with his guardian angel. He once said that he was helped by his guardian angel during a game and wouldn't do it again.
St. Theresa of Avila: Described an episode where an angel pierced her heart with a golden dart, leaving her immersed in love for God
Wooden angel magnets with life-affirming themes.
Activity
To finish our time together we are going to make our own special angels. (*In the middle of the angel, you will glue the phrase “Babies are a gift from God!” Or the “Guardian Angel prayer”.
God loves babies, babies are special, babies are a gift from God…(etc.)
Instructions:
Students will make an Angel as a reminder of our discussion.
Gather materials. 3 ½” unfinished wooden angel cutout one per student, scissors, glue stick, colored pencils or fine markers. (there are a ton of ideas online for students to make angels out of paper plates or using their hand outlines).
With pencils or marker draw a face on your angel. Color or decorate then in the middle of the angel glue the “Babies are a gift from God” or the “Guardian Angel prayer”
Attach magnet strip to back. Making sure students write their name on their angel. (small in back)
