Discussion
As Pope Saint John Paul II said in his encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), “Within the family each member is accepted, respected and honoured precisely because he or she is a person; and if any family member is in greater need, the care which he or she receives is all the more intense and attentive.”
Human life is under attack in countless ways in our culture today. Changing the culture is a process of conversion that begins in our hearts, in our homes and in our families. Do you think you can make a difference?
Please watch The Power Of A Hail Mary video. Talk about the ways they can make a difference.
Every day you have numerous opportunities to show respect for God’s work of creation in yourself and in other people. Respecting life means protecting oneself and others from harm, but it also means valuing life in everyday ways.
Please read: Story Of Very Holy Man Of God and share/ talk to the students about it.
The following chart lists some ways people sometimes do not show enough respect for what God has created. For each action on the left, describe an alternate action that shows a greater respect for life.
Ways of taking Life for Granted
Ignoring or neglecting a person who is developmentally or physically disabled
Using negative self-talk, such as, “I’m so stupid. I hate myself!”
Ignoring someone in your class, acting as if they don’t exist.
Encouraging someone to be mean or to ignore someone else.
