You are special.

There is no one in the world just like you.

First grade’s Main Theme

Discussion

Objective:

The child will discover the uniqueness of each person. The child will get a visual  understanding of life inside the womb by seeing the fetal models and listening to  the storybook at the end of the discussion.

Talking points:

On the first day that you existed inside your mom’s womb, every detail about you  was written inside a cell smaller than a grain of salt (show a clear saltshaker and perhaps shake  a few grains out for them to see as they fall from the shaker into your hand). God knew what color your hair  and eyes would be, whether you would be a girl or a boy, if you’d grow to be short or  tall, and the exact shade of your skin. From that first moment, you were special and  different from everyone else. No one else in the whole world is exactly like you!

Inside the womb, as the baby gets bigger, the heart begins to beat, the baby can  hear, he or she can kick, jump around (just a little), make face expressions, sleep,  swallow, sense light, and suck his thumb. During the second month inside the womb,  your fingerprints begin to develop. Look at the tips of your fingers. Do you see the  swirls and lines? Those designs are called fingerprints. No one else in the whole world  has your fingerprints!

After a baby is born, what can the baby start to do then? (Wait for a few answers such as: see,  cry, crawl, sit, eat solid foods, talk, walk, etc.).

Think about your brothers and sisters. If you don’t have any brothers or sisters, think  about your cousins or other relatives. What kinds of things can you do that they can’t  do? (take just a few answers and move to the next question). What kinds of things can they do that  you can’t do? (allow time for just a few answers, then move to the conclusion)

Conclusion:

You are so special and loved by God. There is no one in the world just like you!

Today we are going to hear the story of how you grew in secret, hidden away, until  the day you were born!

Tools

Ideas to take home

Things students can do when they go home tonight:

• Ask their parents if they moved a lot or kicked a lot when they were in the  womb.

• How did you prepare for me before I came home?

• Did I do something funny that made you laugh/smile? Funny faces, the way I  walked or crawled?

*Students will also get a “matryoshka” nesting doll coloring sheet with 9 babies. The  teacher may choose to do a 9-day novena for the unborn and students will color and glue a baby each day and place it in the matryoshka’s arms.  (See more Extra Activities)
